Jagmeet Singh, a lawyer turned politician, has gained immense popularity and widespread admiration in Canada. Born in Scarborough, Ontario to immigrant parents from India, Singh had a humble upbringing. He graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School and started his career as a criminal defense lawyer, providing pro bono services to marginalized communities. But it wasn’t long before his passion for social justice and advocacy for human rights led him to enter politics.
In 2011, Singh was elected as a member of the Ontario Legislative Assembly, representing the Bramalea-Gore-Malton riding. He quickly made a name for himself as a charismatic and progressive leader, becoming the first turban-wearing Sikh to hold a seat in the provincial legislature. Singh’s commitment to fighting for the rights of marginalized communities, including the LGBTQ community, indigenous peoples, and racialized groups, has been a driving force behind his political career.
Singh’s rise to popularity continued when he entered federal politics in 2017, winning the leadership of the New Democratic Party. He made history once again by becoming the first person of a visible minority to lead a major political party in Canada. Since then, Jagmeet Singh has been a prominent figure in the Canadian political landscape and a fierce advocate for progressive policies such as affordable housing, universal pharmacare, and action on climate
