Jagmeet Singh has quickly become a household name in Canadian politics. Born and raised in Scarborough, Ontario, Singh has always been interested in social justice and advocating for marginalized communities. After obtaining his law degree, he worked as a criminal defense lawyer and also taught at Osgoode Hall Law School. But it wasn’t until he entered the political arena that Singh truly made a name for himself.
In 2011, Singh became the first turban-wearing Sikh to be elected to the Ontario Provincial Parliament. He revitalized the youth wing of the New Democratic Party (NDP) and went on to become the Deputy Leader of the Ontario NDP. In 2017, he made history once again by becoming the first person of South Asian descent to be elected as the leader of a major political party in Canada.
Singh has been a vocal advocate for progressive policies such as universal pharmacare, affordable housing, and implementing a Green New Deal. He has also been a strong advocate for social justice issues, including fighting for the rights of Indigenous communities and advocating for the decriminalization of drug possession. His charismatic personality and inclusivity have garnered him a strong following among young Canadians.
